Meet Chiisai, a farm AI model that fits on your phone

Chiisai is out today. It’s a language model built for farming, and it’s small enough to run entirely on a phone. Ask it a question at the far end of the farm, with no signal, and you still get an answer.

What it does

• Answers in plain language. Ask about crop problems, animal health, spray conditions or machinery, the way you’d ask a colleague.
• Works offline. Every answer is generated on the phone. Nothing is sent to a server.
• Knows farming. Chiisai was trained on agronomy, livestock and farm operations material, and reviewed by agronomists and vets.

Why on the phone

The questions that come up on a farm come up in the field, the yard or the shed, which are often the places with the worst coverage. A model that needs the cloud is no help there. Chiisai runs where you are.
